Using Trade DataWeb



About Trade DataWeb

The ITC DataWeb has been an Internet tool primarily for government users which is now being made available to the general public. There is no charge for registration and use. Completion of a brief user registration form is required. This will allow us to analyze usage and costs by user sectors and save your product and country lists for your personal use at another login. Trade DataWeb can provide US trade figures in a variety of classification formats for both imports and exports.

New users will see the "Create New User Account Form".

Purpose:

The purpose of this guide is to help users identify US trade statistics.

Getting started:

  1. Go to the following: http://dataweb.usitc.gov/scripts/user_set.asp and create your own account.
  2. Once complete, return to http://dataweb.usitc.gov/scripts/user_set.asp.

Using Trade DataWeb

  1. After login, click on U.S. Total Exports under Option One and HTS Items and “Proceed With New Query”.  
  2. For “Select the data to report on:” Select Customs Value
  3. For “Select the years to display:” Hold your control key and highlight five complete years of data.
  4. For “Select all commodities or a pre-defined list:” select “Create a new Commodity List” and select HTS10Exports on the next screen pressing “Select Commodity Level”.
  5. On the next screen, enter the name of the company you are working with and press “Make a New List”.
  6. In “Highlight the chapter or category that has your items:” scroll to the 2-digity HS classification having the HS Number previously identified on the Census website.  In this example, I’m using 87 and press “Show Items”.
  7. In “List of HTS10 Numbers for Selection:” scroll down until you find the 10-digit HS number previously identified 8708805000.and press “Copy Item”
  8. Add any additional products as appropriate and press “Return to Query Design Page”.
  9. For “Select all commodities or a pre-defined list:” change to your newly created query.
  10. For “Select all countries or a pre-defined list:” leave it at “All Countries” unless you’re looking for specific markets.
  11. For “District of Export” leave at “All Districts” unless looking for statistics from a specific Customs District”.
  12. Under “Data Presentation” accept the default values making only one change – For “Select Aggregate Level & Type (HTS, AG, or End Use):” click “Display Commodity Description” and click “Proceed to Next Step”.
  13. To Sort by Country, click on it first moving it to the right column and then on HS.
  14. On the “Sort Order Page” make the following changes:
    • Click Show All Records
    • Change “Total Number of records to display” to 5000
  15. Press “Run Report” 

You’ll now be able to identify both the largest markets for US Exports as well as the fastest growing markets.

To download the data click on “Download File” and follow the directions.  You’ll now be able to download for further work in Excel or Lotus.
